The Historic Downtown Certified Farmers Market opened for its 2013 season on Thursday evening. Dozens of booths lined F Street and Beermann’s Plaza while locals browsed and bought fresh farm produce from local growers. The first Farmers Market of the year was well-attended and several of the booths were crowded throughout the evening with eager shoppers.
Sponsored by the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, the Farmers Market will run every Thursday night from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through August 29.
Lincoln residents Tom and Ariana (age 3) enjoyed samples from the food vendors. Ariana’s smile was framed with the remnants of a lollipop. Tom said it was his first chance to attend the Farmers Market. He said, “I usually get off work too late to come down here. Tonight I got the chance, so we are checking it out. This is great.”
In addition to the fresh fruits and vegetables, other food-related products included honey, olive oil and live plants. Business vendors also were on hand to promote their products and services to passers-by. The YesterDays News Band played live music on the plaza while listeners relaxed and danced in the shade.
Many of the market shoppers made a night out of it, staying downtown and visiting with friends. Downtown eateries were crowded as well.
